Medals given during the war?

I'm working with someone who's ancestor, Charles Gooch, was killed during the Battle of Rutherford's Farm in Virginia in 1864. He was a member of Co. K 14th WV Infantry. The descendant says that he remembers seeing a medal that was given out in his honor when he was younger. He used to take it to school for show and tell, so he knows it exists. He doesn't know where the medal is now, but he's wondering what kind of medal that might have been. I don't think it was a medal of honor. What other medals would have been given to soldiers during the Civil War? Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance

The state of West Virginia gave medals to every Union soldier from the state. A number of them were never collected and I believe are still available to descendants of those soldiers.
In 1866, the state of West Virginia authorized the minting of over 26,000 medals to honor its Union Civil War soldiers. Today, over 4,000 medals remain unclaimed.

Oh, that might be it! Thanks for pointing that out.
