As reported in the The Tennessean, the long-missing ninth volume of a diary written by former Nashville mayor and Confederate officer Randal McGavock was found. This particular work covers the Civil War years, ending just before he died at the Battle of Raymond, May 12, 1863.

According to this, The Tennessean writer may have screwed up the story in a minor way. There were two Nashville mayors with the same name, both related, with the first one building the Carnton Plantation in Franklin in 1826; the second one dying at the Battle of Raymond in 1863. The story hinted that the second McGavock (the Colonel) built it. Minor discrepancy.
