The men of the 5th Texas Infantry clustered around Traveler and refused to let General Lee lead the charge of Hood's Texas Brigade, sending him to the rear so they could do their job without endangering him. My ancestor, Acting Major John J McBride led one wing of the 5th Texas' attack and was wounded, shot in the hip and both legs. Those actions on May 6 inspired 20 years of study about the 5th Texas and writing a thousand pages of historical fiction in three novels about the regiment. Here's the cover to Defiant Honor, the book that includes the battle of the Wilderness.
