Matt Atkinson is a native of Houston, Mississippi - a little town about thirty miles below Tupelo. During the Vicksburg campaign, on April 20, 1863, Colonel Benjamin H. Grierson and his cavalrymen passed through Houston on their way to Starkville, MS - as part of "Grierson's Raid." It was this local connection that first prompted Matt's interest in the Civil War. Mr. Atkinson is a graduate of the University of Mississippi, where he received bachelor's degrees in Business and History. He earned his Masters in History from Louisiana-Monroe. Matt has worked at Petersburg National Battlefield, Natchez National Historical Park, Manassas National Battlefield, Vicksburg National Military Park, and is currently a ranger/historian at Gettysburg National Military Park.

I don't have any questions for Matt that wouldn't seem trivial or self-serving—but I really enjoy his lectures and battlefield tours. Maybe he could tell us how close the 21st Mississippi came to capturing that last battery northeast of the Trostle Woods on July 2.
