Maryland Relics

These were found in Maryland near the town used as a staging area for the Battle of Balls Bluff. They include C-box plates and EB-plate and musket sling hooks,
and bullet with triangle bottom, and rosette with possible battle damage, 1850s large cent, etc.
These were found in the late 1970s.

Nice finds! Did you dig 'em? What MD are you using? We go "dirt fishing" sometimes, too. Use Bounty Hunter, cheap but gets the job done. Have not dug a collection as you show, but have a few O.K. relics. Even some of the "junk" is somewhat of a treasure and ends up in a box of found stuff. Thanks for sharing.

Do you mean the 2 cent piece or the cylinder device? These in this case were all found by a young man
with a metal detector who was our "paper boy" many years ago. He delivered to us our
newspaper. When he became a man he needed money
and he sold these to me for what was then a lot of money. I had seen him out detecting when I had been
also detecting. If he ever wants to buy these back from me. I will try to oblige, but I will only sell to him!

Howdy MRB1863, I used to detect and found some nice items and a few plates, but the box here with the
five plates I bought from a young man who had been our "paper boy" he delivered our newspaper to us.
I did find some things there near where he dug, and I used to find things in the Wilderness in Virginia.
These days I do better dealing and trading than digging!

We did most of our detecting with a good friend who has since passed. Don't get out much since his passing. Together, we have found uniform coat buttons, US buckle plate, guidiron staff tip, many horseshoes, buckles, flat buttons, coins and assorted "junk". Detected mostly after researching information regarding a small encounter, troop movement or encampment local to our area. Detected in hopes of adding credence to the authenticity of the activity more-so than just collecting. Have learned much in the process. Still have mysteries to try to solve, but will have to do so without our friend.

I mean the cylinder. It is the remains of a fountain pen. We recoved many from Maple Leaf. I'll send you some pics if you want. Also, I'm curios about the contents in the upper left hand corner, what is in there?

Wilderness battlefield.

The box I refered to is in another persons photo. I was confused.
FYI we also recovered an entire case of 58 cal. Buletts with the arsenals name on it. ECU (east Carolina University) wrote a nice report. One out of every three bullets were imperfect and would not have gone into a barrel. Thus one of the reasons so many perfectly shaped bullets (like you seem to have) were found on and around battlefields.

NS Trader? Bullets IDed with the arsenal name are good. The one I think of most
are those with the star in the base. I once found a fired bullet with the "US" in it,
and that Ids it to a certain arsenal, if I remember right.
