I'm posting this for a friend who is interested in his ancestors. When he told me his name and about the service of his CW ancestor, I mentioned an Officer who might be related. We are both curious to know if they are.
Charles Carroll Marsh was a Union Army officer who served with distinction early in the war at the battles of Fort Donelson and Shiloh. He is commonly referred to as "C. Carrol Marsh" in official reports. He was born in Oswego, New York in 1829 but in 1853, he moved to Chicago, Illinois to study law.
C. C. Marsh was Colonel of the 20 Illinois in an OR dated Dec 31, 1861. Almost a year later in Nov 10, 1862, Maj Orton Frisbie replaced him as commander of the regiment and Colonel C. C. Marsh was temporarily assigned as CO of 1st Brigade, of Logan's 3rd Division of the XVII Corps in the opening stages of Grant's First Vicksburg Campaign. Colonel Marsh resigned on April 22, 1863. He was appointed Brigadier General but later his appointment was withdrawn.

The next person:
Joesph Marsh. At Battle of Franklin, Marsh was in 23d Army Corps, under Brig-Gen Jacob Cox, Second Division, Gen Ruger, 2d Brigade, Col. Moore, 107th Illinois. He was a First Sergeant and received a field commission to 2nd Lieutenant after this battle. He was born in Ohio but lived in Illinois before the war.
This is all that Fold3 has on him.
Q: Is there any family connection? Say 1st cousins or Uncle? I'm not asking to go back 10 generations.
