MS Marion, MS CSA Cemetery

I went by the Marion CSA Cemetery today. I just joined the forum and just discovered this area yesterday.
In my area.... Meridian, MS.... there are at least 7 CSA cemeteries within a few minutes driving distance.

The first pictures I want to share with you all is the CSA Cemetery in Marion, MS just a few minutes north of Meridian.
There are at least 170 CSA soldiers buried there......

A very solemn place.

There is 170 Unknown Soldier stones erected in 10 rows of 17.
The names of 47 of the dead soldiers are listed on the large marker which shows the unit each man was a part of. It is amazing to see so many confederate states represented!
May we never forget their sacrifice!

Unusual list of regiments. I counted about 6 different Arkansas regiments. Not many Mississippi units.

Yes.... there was a hospital at this site. The workers just buried the dead out behind the hospital.
Marion, MS and Meridian, MS have joining borders. Marion is north of Meridian.

Exactly! I thought the same thing. Those soldiers came from all over the south.

So sad so many unknowns far from home. Sons of the south cut down in the prime of life.

One thing I noticed.... There were many names shown on the plaques attached to a unit that stood out to me. The 40th Mississippi Infantry. I wondered which battles the 40th MS took part in that would have evacuated them to the Meridian area. A quick google search shows they were involved in the battles of Iuka, Corinth and Vicksburg in their home state of Mississippi.

Keep in mind, there were far more deaths from disease than battle casualties.

YES.... it seems like a small thing BUT without any medications (other than alcohol) it was hard to treat diarrhea, pneumonia and even measles. I have seen many illnesses listed on the service cards that we wouldn't see as "serious" today.
