This is from a set of 17 US Marine uniforms through the ages. The artist is Maj. J. H. Magruder, USMC. To me it appears fairly accurate.

So any thoughts on this sergeant? My scanner made his rank stripes look reddish but in the print they are yellow. I wonder about his musket, it kind of looks a bit long.

Is his musket long, or is he short?. Here is my favorite for the Marine Corps of 1864:

Quite a smart bunch!

Just a note on the earlier photo: this photo for some reason - probably the chemical mix of the film - does not show the 'yellow worsted' of the epaullette fringe nor that for the NCOs chevrons or the edges of the cuffs. Scarlet piping on chevrons and cuffs would show as black on most photos of this era. He appears to be a corporal as those same epaulette fringes look the same. If he was a sergeant they would be twice as wide as the ORs. He does not wear a sash around his waist either as an orderly sergeant would. All NCOs carried a sword. I will try to colorize this one appropriately and post it.

Here goes:

A bit more like they SHOULD look!
