Marine Corps

They were at Harper's Ferry in 1859 and captured John Brown . They also fought at 1st Manassas . Primarily involved aboard ship and coastal engagements the rest of the war .

Did they see much action during the CW I've not seen them mentioned in my studies so far ?
They were at the First battle of New Market in Virginia and at the battle for Ft.Fisher. We have at least several threads about the USMC during the ACW and st least one on the smaller Confederate Marines.

There was a series of four books by David M. Sullivan that followed the US Marines during the Civil War and one by Ralph W. Donnelly that followed the Confederate Marine Corps.

Yes, and they were commanded by an Army officer and accompanied by another Army Officer that went on to other higher plateaus of leadership, one was a Colonel by the name of Robert E. Lee and one was a Lieutenant by the name of James Ewell Brown Stuart aka "Jeb". During the melee, Marine Lieutenant Israel Greene thrust his sword at John Brown's midsection, it bent double and Israel subdued him by beating Brown over the head with the hilt of the sword. Semper Fi.
