i amteaching a class on the 1862 Shenandoah Valley campaign and my students will be doing some analysis of the campaigns.

in that regard i'm looking for some general, 'gross' data.

i understand that regiments usually marched 4 abreast. given that, how long would a regimental [app 700 men] column be?

how many miles would such a unit, in good, moderate weather cover in an hour? 8 hours?

i know these are VERY GENERALIZED notional numbers, but i need something for the students to work with.

any help would be much appreciated.
