I think you may have a typo, Hoke was in North Carolina in March 1865

Lane's Brigade: BG James H. Lane
(Deateched to Hoke's Division in South Carolina) 7th North Carolina: Maj. James G. Harris
Yes, I put Hoke's Division in North Carolina it like was during & after Bentonville with Johnston.

This is amazing! Do you know where I can find information on Lightfoot's and Basinger's battalions? Information on those six batteries is woefully scarce.

Note: Forsberg's and Smith's brigades were not with Wharton. At the time, Forsberg's brigade was under Lt. Col. Robert H. Logan of the 45th Virginia, and s part of General Lilley's command. Lt. Col. William E. Fife (36th VA) commanded Smith's brigade, also in Lilley's command. Only Patton's old brigade, under LTC John McDonald, had been transferred from Early's to Echols' command. Colonel Robert Trigg of the 54th VA was in the area, tracking down ddeserters, and was assigned to that brigade when he was cut off.

I am doing research on Trigg. Any info you have on his movements during 64-65 would be greatly appreciated.

Good project. I am going to copy and paste what you posted and save it for reference when reading about the siege and the events leading up to Appomattox.

The Florida regiments were one brigade not two. The Florida Brigade AKA "Perry's Brigade" originally the 2nd, 5th, and 8th Fl. were reinforced in 64 from units that served at Olustee under Finnegan, reorganized and became the 9th, 10th, and 11th Fl. when they arrived in Virginia. Finnegan was given comand of the brigade and was called by some as Finnegan's Brigade but they were one in the same.

@ChicagoRebel :
According to OR V33 (pp 1106-1110), on December 29, 1863, Maj. Gen. Samuel Jones, commanding the Department of Southwest Virginia, requested that the 54th and 63rd Virginia regiments be assigned back to his department, as he had only loaned them to the Army of Tennessee. However, Adjutant General Samuel Cooper recommended against sending the two regiments, as he believed that placing two regiments so close to their homes would lower their "military discipline," and he instead suggested sending Corse's brigade, of Pickett's division.
However, on January 20, 1864, twenty-five legislators representing Southwest Virginia petitioned President Davis for reinforcements; their request was supported by General Lee, who also suggested that the 54th and 63rd Virginia be transferred back to that region. However, soon afterwards, the Atlanta Campaign began, and the two regiments were caught up in it. However, after the campaign ended, Colonel Robert C. Trigg was furloughed from his regiment (the 54th Virginia), most likely due to a disagreement with his brigade commander, Alexander W. Reynolds:

According to OR V42P2 (pp 1252), on September 16, 1864, the War Department finally got around to the Virginia legislators' petition, and saw a way to kill two birds with one stone: get Trigg away from the army and also support Southwest Virginia:
1717959753304.png

By October 27, Trigg had collected many of these men. Here is a letter from Brig. Gen. John Echols on the subject:
1717959529466.png
(OR V43P2 pp 907).
As previously mentioned, the original goal was for Trigg to return these men to their regiments in the Army of Tennessee. However, on November 15, 1864, Secretary of War James Seddon wrote Maj. Gen. John C. Breckinridge, Jones' successor in the department:
1717959654925.png
Seddon believed that Trigg's men returning to their department would just cause them to desert again, and recommended that Trigg's men remain in the area. (OR V43P2 pp 921)

This is the last record in the OR on Trigg. However, General Basil W. Duke records that Colonel Robert C. Trigg commanded a brigade in the Department of Southwest Virginia in April, 1865. Most likely, Trigg was not able to rejoin the Army of Tennessee, partly because of Seddon's letter, but mostly because the Army of Tennessee was too far away, being at Nashville during December, 1864, and then at Corinth, Mississippi into February, 1865. With the numerous Union cavalry raids under Maj. Gen. George Stoneman, Trigg's troops' removal was too risky, as well. Additionally, after the near-annihilation of the infantry portion of the Army of the Valley at Waynesboro, on March 2, 1865, Colonel Trigg was the only infantry colonel remaining in the department, and would have thus taken command of General John Echols' infantry brigade, the only regular Confederate force present in the area. This is that brigade (OR V49P1 pp 1021):
1717961798115.png

On April 11, 1865, these men, including Colonel Trigg, were furloughed to their homes, and never returned to service.

Sorry about the long post; I've studied Trigg a lot myself, as well.

I was elated to see all the info. Thank you for taking the time to put all of that together. I'm doing a deep dive into the Heroes of America. And all that intrigue that was going on in Montgomery and Floyd county Virginia.

I've gathered everything from the OR I think but I was wondering if you have any information on the HOA secret order? My great great grandfather and his three brothers were in the Civil War under Trigg…two of them in the 54th and two of them in the 63rd. My gg grandfather and two of his brothers made it out. One of his brothers was a prisoner of war and paroled after taking the oath in 65. They were both in the 63rd. My other gg uncle was with Trigg on special assignment in Christiansburg.

I've never actually heard of the Heroes of America order. Also, do you have any other information on your great-uncle that was with Trigg in Christiansburg, specifically as to any other officers and men Trigg rounded up? Naturally there is no information on such a unit, since they consisted mainly of AWOLs.

I am still digging. One telling way to find out is to go through the records on Fold3 anyone in the 54th or 63rd that got paid on 12/26/1864 in Richmond was with him. The only way I know Chavenous Gearhart, my uncle was with him is that he shows in a Richmond hospital and got back pay the day after Christmas 1864.
