Major Henry D. McDaniel

So last night I started reading a book of letters Major Henry D. McDaniel who was a Major in 11th Georgia Infantry wrote to his future wife Hester and other family members. I find this book fascinating in several respects first Major McDaniel is from my hometown. Secondly two of my 3rd great uncles served in the Major's Company and regiment. Major McDaniel would later serve as Governor of Georgia. He quotes in the book the following which I found interesting "The Virginia Cavalry used our tents made by the ladies in Walton County as water troughs for their horses" This caused several of the men to catch colds due to the weather in Virginia some even caught the measles. The Captain of the Company was Captain Matthew T. Nunnally who attended West Point before resigning. Captain Nunnally was killed at the battle of Gettysburg. Major McDaniel is captured at Funkstown and held as a prisoner of war for the rest of the war. I just started the book so looking forward to reading more on Major McDaniel but wanted to share this with the site.

Also my friend Rick Allen wrote a four volume set of Rosters on the 7th, 8th, 9th and 11th Georgia Infantry. He relied on McDaniel's book of letters "With Unabated Trust" to put together an excellent battlefield walk of Anderson's Brigade at Gettysburg.

I am going to try get me a set of these books "With Unabated Trust" is a good book to read. I am currently reading it I wanted to see what Major McDaniel had to say about Captain Matthew T. Nunnally.

There's a great anecdote about McDaniel that I like to tell when I give my talks on the retreat from Gettysburg. When the severely wounded McDaniel was taken to the Keller house, his orderly stayed with him. The orderly left an account of how he knew McDaniel was going to survive and be okay: while lying there on the porch desperately wounded, McDaniel complimented the shapely ankles of the lady of the house.

The orderly said that when he heard that, he knew McDaniel was going to be just fine.

That story always gets a lot of laughs when I tell it, and for good reason.
