Mahlon Manson Questions

Brig. Gen. Mahlon D. Manson was captured following the utter disaster at Richmond, Ky.

Following his exchange, he promoted from brigade level, to division, and then to command of the XXIII Corps in the Knoxville Campaign- all within two months.

Why the rapid ascent? Who promoted- and what might they have seen in him?

Whatever it was, guess it was gone by the Atlanta Campaign- where we find him back in command of a brigade.

So why the big reversal after achieving corps command? Just curious about this guy…..

When George L. Hartsuff could no longer serve in the field, Mahlon Manson was the senior officer in the Twenty-third Corps until Jacob D. Cox was assigned to the corps in December 1863 which bumped Manson back to division command. When Schofield took over the corps in April 1864, Cox went back to division command, and Manson went back to brigade command. It was definitely a weird situation, though.
