A very popular "southern" apple. Originally found in Davidson County NC in the 1820s and widely grown in the Piedmont regions of the Carolina's and Virginia by the time of the war. I can find them for sale from time at stores and farmers markets in central NC in the late summer, early fall.

It falls into the subacid category which is between sweet and tart. Which makes for a refreshing flavor that is aromatic in this variety which enhances the eating experience.
