Joseph Christian Leyendecker was a German American and 'the' illustrator for the Saturday Evening Post until Norman Rockwell arrived. This is reportedly an unused illustration he made for the Post, but my source could be incorrect and the image used internally in the magazine.

If you want a weekend treat, type his name into your Google image or Pinterest search engine. He went by both his full name and the initials J C Leyendecker. Amazing talent.

Another less prolific illustrator to look up is Maurice Bower. Bower loved to draw horses for his covers but did a couple of the more beautiful ones of old soldiers in post 1.

I am a great admirer of Norman Rockwell’s work and have, twice, visited the Rockwell home and museum but have somehow managed to miss these. Thanks for posting, great pictures.
