What is this? M1860 Cavalry Sabre?

Hello,

I'm trying to get an ID on this sabre. It looks like an m1860 calvary sabre, but I am not sure. The markings and stamps in the pictures were all that I could find. I did not find initials or a city. I inherited this from my grandfather.

Welcome from the Fort Sumter and the Fredericksburg forums.

It appears to be a Model 1840 but I have no idea about the engraving on the blade or marks on the hilt.

Now that I think about it, I think it might be a French model 1822 given the writing looks to be French and the model 1840 was designed like the 1822 French saber.

@explorersworkbench I am certainly no expert but the markings on the blade, (in French), the straight blade, and the single ring on the scabbard make me think it might be an 1882 French light cavalry saber. If I'm not mistaken the model 1822 had a curved blade and two rings in the scabbard.

You can see pictures of the French 1882 light cavalry saber if you Google "French model 1882 Light Cavalry saber". But, as I said above I am no expert. I have a couple of books on French swords and sabers and will try to look it up.

From the book Sabers Carried by The French Army by Jean La hosts and Patrick Resek, page 405: one example is signed Manufacture de Chatellerault and carries the date 1885.

The book is in French.

This might be helpful to you.
