M1808 Dated 1809 Bartlett

Got this in yesterday from Gunderson. Appears to be an upside down U.S. at the top of the lock above Bartlett. Something in the barrel about midways down. Will try to get it out today. Wanted something representing the War of 1812 and later years. The M1808's were based on the M1795 design.

I have been searching around and think my next purchase is going to be a Springfield 1795 or an 1808 Contract Musket.

Although I have never purchased anything of Gundersons, he is a pleasant gentleman to talk with over the phone.

I have read that 1808s were made due to the rising tensions with Great Britain during that time period.

But were they put into armories to arm the State Miltias if need be, or were they issued to the Regular Army and Marine Corps?

Good observation, I didn't notice that until you mentioned it. My guess would a repair to the lock, but what do I know.

When I spoke with him on the phone, him and his son were as nice as they could be. I kind of consider Gundersons to be like the junk yard for muskets. But I have to say this one looks nicer in person than it did in the pics. I wouldn't hesitate to buy from them again. This is one of the 1808 era contract muskets but I don't believe it was delivered to the federal government as it has no cartouches I can see. I understand all 19 of the makers who issued a contract were having issues with government inspectors not inspecting fast enough for the contractor to get their money so they sold a lot of these M1808's to state militias and even to South America. That's the way I understand it anyway.

It's just a missing piece of wood. I can see someone in the past probably trying to pry the lock out chipping it.
