Do some research on a local Michigan militia company, Curtenus Guards of Mason Michigan, who became Company F of the 7th Michigan Infantry Regiment. The company contained many men who claimed to have been born in Germany or Prussia. They list several cities of birth in both Prussia and Germany. Four of the men list their birth place as Luxemburg (city), country listed as Germany. One man said he was born in Belgium (city) country listed as Germany. My question being, should I count all men listing being born in Germany as "Germans"? How about the ones who list Luxemburg or Belgium as the city they were born and the country of Germany? Should they not be listed as being Belgians or Luxembourgians? I guess this comes down to exactly what a "German" was in 1860.
