I was wondering what happened in Louisburgh in 1865 that relates to the war. I have a ancestor that is being listed as dying there in July of 1865. Thanks

Nothing really happened in Louisburg. Your ancestor was with Sherman when he came through NC. The Battle of Bentonville was in March 1865, which is about 61 miles south of Louisburg (by today's roads). From Bentonville, Sherman marched to Raleigh. And then on to Durham where he and Johnston met at Bennetts Place. That meeting was on April 26, 1865. Louisburg is 30 miles northeast of Raleigh. According to Ancestry.com's American Civil War Soldiers, William John Waggoner died of disease 22 July 1865. According to a member's tree on Ancestry, William John Waggoner died of typhoid fever and was buried by a Rev. Ed W. Gilliam, of the Louisburg Episcopal Church. Either Rev. Gilliam was a Union sympathizer, or he was just doing his Christian duty to give the young man a proper burial.

This photo was posted by JeanHAnderson on her tree at Ancestry.com. It is of William J. Waggoner's grave.
