The op of this thread is a discussion more than a partisan debate. A search for evidence, I hope, than just rhetoric. While the Lost Cause historiography misrepresented historical interpretation for generations and disturbs our calm contemplation of the Civil War even to today, what was the motive and what if anything was the alternative. The Lost Cause is like a screeching of fingernails on a old time slate chalkboard to me, but I also see the pathos of a proud people devastated and destroyed by a war for a lost cause that ultimately is about wealth in flesh. Was the Lost Cause the price for reunion?

So have at it.
