When Thomas was banished from Washington because he spread stories that Sherman was insane he was sent to Helena Arkansas. There he worked to create black regiments. Through Thomas' efforts numerous regiments were raised with a total of 76,00 troops. It could be said the Thomas helped raise an entire Union Army.
