Looking up several different relatives.

Hi, I'm trying to look up information on some relatives, and find proof that they are relatives since I want to join the SCV....I'm currently trying to get the proof, but in the mean time, I'm interested in finding out what I can about them. One of them is my g-g-g-great grandfather, Floyd Fretwell Folsom who was born in February, of 1814, and died Nov. 14, 1876. Then there is his son, James Austin Folsom, who is my g-g-g-great uncle, who was Born April 7, 1842(which coincidentally is my birthday as well), and died April 1, 1911. Then there's Simpson Pike, my g-g-g-great grandfather, and his brothers Jasper Reeves Pike, John F. Pike, and William T.F. Pike. From what I've been able to find so far, James A. Folsom served in Company I, of the 13th Alabama Infantry, though when I looked on the Alabama State Archives website, it listed two of them, one in Company I, and one in a supposed Company S, of which I can find no other record. The one listed in Company S, has a very extensive battle record, and was wounded twice, once at Sharpsburg, aka Antietam, and again at Chancellorsville. He also fought at Gettysburg. And then there was William T.F. Pike, who from what I have found so far, was killed fighting for the Confederacy at the Battle of Chickamauga. He was in Company A, of the 2nd Battalion of Hilliard's Legion. The other's....I have no clue other than that they all served with units from Alabama. Any help would be very much appreciated.

1st Regiment, Alabama Infantry
1st Infantry Regiment completed its organization at Pensacola, Florida, in March, 1861. The men were from the counties of Tallapoosa, Pike, Lowndes, Wilcox, Talladega, Barbour, and Macon. For a year it manned the batteries at Pensacola, then with 1,000 men moved to Missouri where all but a detachment were captured at Island No. 10. The prisoners were exchanged during September, 1862, and it was soon ordered to Port Hudson. Here the unit endured many hardships, and nearly 500 were captured on July 9, 1863. Exchanged and reorganized with 610 effectives the 1st joined the Army of Tennessee and served in General Quarles' and Shelley's Brigade. It took an active part in the Atlanta and Tennessee Campaigns, and ended the war in North Carolina. Its casualties were high at Peach Tree Creek and were again heavy at Franklin and Nashville. Less than 100 surrendered in April, 1865. The field officers were Colonels Henry D. Clayton and I.G.W. Steedman, Lieutenant Colonel Michael B. Locke, and Majors S.L. Knox and Jere N. Williams.


What county are your ancestors form in Alabama......???

The 1st Alabama Infantry was called the 1st Alabama Artillery but was changed somewhere along the line when moved west....

13th Regiment, Alabama Infantry
13th Infantry Regiment completed its organization in July, 1861, at Montgomery, Alabama. Men of this unit were from the counties of Coosa, Wilcox, Macon, Butler, Talladega, Montgomery, Randolph, Elmore, and Tallapoosa. Ordered to Virginia, it served under General Rains at Yorktown, and in April, 1862, contained 474 effectives. Later the 13th was assigned to General Colquitt's, Archer's, Sanders', and W.H. Forney's Brigade, Army of the Northern Virginia. It participated in many conflicts from Williamsburg to Cold Harbor, then fought in the long Petersburg siege south of the James River and the campaign that ended at Appomattox. This regiment reported 52 casualties at Seven Pines, 101 during the Seven Days' Battles, and 140 at Chancellorsville. Of the 308 engaged at Gettysburg, over half were disabled. It surrendered with 6 officers and 85 men on April 9, 1865. The field officers were Colonels James Aiken and B.D. Fry; Lieutenant Colonels William H. Betts, R.H. Dawson, S.B. Marks, and Julius C.B. Mitchell; and Major John T. Smith.


There are a lot of Folsom's in the 13th Al. Inf. Reg.....likely all relatives...

Thank you! I truly appreciate the help. And as for which counties were they from....well they were mostly from the Tallapoosa county area, though a couple of them, might have been, in Randolph. And as for, the Folsom relatives in the 13th Alabama Infantry...well possibly though they weren't brothers to the one's I mentioned since in his family he was the only one old enough to fight, other than his father, Floyd, my g-g-g-great grandfather, though there's a very good chance that they were cousins, and some of the cousins might have been brothers.

I found the cemetery that the Pikes were buried in and it states what confederate units they were in.....Simpson had a nick name "Simpsie"...it is in Randolph county...

Simpson Pike was listed with the 34th Al. Inf. but one looks at the records there's a L.S. Pike listed with the Company F....

James Austin FOLSOM was born on 7 Apr 1842 in Tallapoosa Co, AL. He died on 1 Apr 1911. He was buried in Rupeville, Carroll Co, GA. Parents: Floyd Fretwell FOLSOM and Elizabeth Mary SANDERS.
Spouse: Lucinda E. HAMILTON. James Austin FOLSOM and Lucinda E. HAMILTON were married on 15 Nov 1865 in Randolph Co, AL. Children were: Lee FOLSOM.

Okay was John Floyd Pike born on June 6, 1822, and did he have a brother named Simpson Pike? And was his father a William Pike who was born around 1799?

I'm Felton Mitchell, Opelika, AL, and my Dad's line is also through John Floyd "Buddy" Pike. I just located John Floyd's probate file in the Randolph County probate records at the Alabama State Archives last week. The probate file says he died 19 Dec 1875 near Rock Mills, Randolph County, AL. His children are listed in the probate records, my great grandmother was Martini Josephine Pike, his youngest daughter. Her name is garbled everywhere it appears in records, but my grandmother Stella Reese Mitchell spelled it Martini. Although John Floyd died in 1875, his estate was not probated until 1908, which was AFTER the Randolph County courthouse burned in 1896, destroying all the old records, these are the post fire records

I will be glad to send you John Floyd's probate record, I scanned it in so I can email it if you like, just give me your email address. I also have some probate records on his grandfather, Joshua S. Reeves, son of Revolutionary War Virginia Militia Lt. William Reeve(s). I also have William Reeves will and RW pension file.

I am trying to prove up John Floyd Pike as the son of William Pike. I can't find any documentation. John Floyd had married and moved out of William's household before the 1850 census. I have all of his CSA records. Do you have or know anyone who has any documentation, deeds, bibles, letters, etc. that show that John Floyd was William's son?

Hi Felton, I would like all the info you have if you don't mind. I live in Waterford MI. My line is through William Green Pike then, Charles David Pike, his son David O. Pike , my father. I have a book on the Pike's, that has the info. I would love the RW stuff, everything! we can help each other! Please call, if you want! I was born in Hackleburg AL. Good to talk to you on the phone. I emailed John Floyd Pike's CSA service records and his probate file.

If anyone reading this has any information tying John Floyd Pike to any of his brothers I would like to hear from you. If I can tie John Floyd to any of his brothers, I can probably prove him the son of William using census records of William and the brothers.
