Friends,

Below are two images that I located on Find-a-Grave. They are too low of resolution to be published in a book.

I am looking for these images so that I can get scans of no less than 300 dpi so that I can use them in my forthcoming book project on the cavalry battles around Richmond at the end of May, 1864: Hanovertown, Haw's Shop, Old Church (Matadequin Creek), and Cold Harbor on May 31 and June 1.

One image is of Col. Benjamin Huger Rutledge, Jr., commander of the 4th South Carolina Cavalry. Because Maj. Gen. Matthew C. Butler had not arrived yet, Rutledge commanded the 4th and 5th SC Cavalry at Haw's Shop on May 28, 1864. The other image is of Lt. Col.. John B. Millen, commander of the 20th Georgia Cavalry Battalion, who was KIA at Haw's Shop.

Any help in tracking down publishable quality images will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

Eric

I hope someone can squirrel these out of some collection or online resource for you. I would advise that in the publishing business resolution is a bit of a game. Regardless of technical metric they can and do use any image that's reasonably viewable (In other words an image 8 inches wide at 120 dpi can be used at a smaller size at 300 dpi for purposes of the printing press). As a fall-back, a poor second if you can't find better originals, it is also possible to "tease" a lower res image into a nominally acceptable higher res image, as I've done here (both 5 inches wide at 300 dpi).

Not that it's likely to make a difference, but some sources list him John M. Millen, not John L., the M standing for macPherson.
