Haven't been here in some time so hope all are doing well. I'm putting together a display on one wall of my rec room (That's all wifey would allow me). I have a GREAT Ames 1864 Cavalry saber and prints of my favorite Generals and such. What I'm looking for now are 2 flags. I have my eye on a 3rd Ky stitched cotton flag on ebay with the battles they fought stitched on it (repro), including Shiloh which is why I'm interested in it. I think it is 38" square but can't seem to locate anything other than a 3x5' Union Cavalry guidon to complete the set. Would like them to be the same size. Any ideas?? Thanks much

There are several companies and individuals who create specific flags such as you describe on order. I don't have a list, but I'm sure there are those around who are about to provide that. I suspect your challenge may be cost. Or at least, that's always my problem. Cost will of course depend on complexity and materials. Best of luck with your effort. Maybe you could eventually post a photo of your display?

LOL! Not a ROOM Craig...Just one wall of a room. Cost is always an issue Larry but what the hey? The Ky one on ebay is about $100 federal shipped! I don't think the Yanks stitched battles on their flags did they? Would be cool for me to find a 3' square guidon with Shiloh on it.

I fought a valiant fight and won a concession for an Enfield over my
fireplace. A day doesn't go by that I don't enjoy looking at it.
In fact, her disdain for the manliness of it somewhat heightens
my appreciation. Whatever you decide looks good to your eye is what
you should get for that wall.

To answer your question, "no" not too many Yanks stitched battle
names on their guidons, in general. The US Army use(d) streamers
for various campaigns on the Organizational colors for the regiment
in the stand of colors.

I don't have the space inside to place a couple of flags, so what I did was add a second flag pole out front in the yard. The second pole is 12' and the primary one is 16'. The american flag flies on the 16footer, and I fly various confederate flags and early american flags on the shorter 12footer. I figure I am pushing it when I have a 2 door gun safe in the bedroom, and a musket with leathers hanging above the dining room table, and my wife pushed out of the closet with my uniforms and clothing.

Technically the full title is the Department of War, but she also answers to the nickname "War Dept."
The Civil War Musket was dedicated to the War Dept. An inside joke. Hopefully she will never read the footnotes, that's where all the truly inspired stuff is.

In a house crammed floor to ceiling with Americana kitsch, shaker chairs and Longaberger baskets
there needed to be some small homage to testosterone--for the sake of the children.

You boys are a riot! I think I'll be doing the streamer idea. Anyone know where I might locate some?? I have several prints of prominent figures from the war for each side. One of my favorites....N.B. Forrest! The wizard of the saddle!
Down the road as funding becomes available from the "War Department", I hope to get that musket (Springfield, Enfield, whatever), and either an 1860 Army Colt or 1851 Navy Colt. Kinda partial to the 1851 for it's looks but I WAS in the Army so I don't know just yet. Did many Army soldiers carry the 1851??? I can't have that in my house if it was carried only by Navy folks. TSK!

The Colt "Navy" was carried by a variety of soldiers on both sides in all branches
of service. Both Lee and Grant carried a .36 Colt Navy revolver during the Civil War.
The 1851 Colt revolver in .36 caliber is called "Navy" because it has a Naval scene etched
on the cylinder from the Mexican War.

Mine makes a great paperweight at events. They also "display well."

Thanks Craig fot the 1851 info. I REALLY fancy that pistol's looks. Now I can put that on my wish list instead of the 1860. Gotta get the word out to anyone who loves me that my life would not be complete without these things?? LOL!

Doug, when I Googled Union guidons with streamers, I got several hits that looked promising--you might check further. Bet you could even get some made if you have a local flag company (show them what you want and they can probably duplicate). More prints of THAT GUY would probably, IMHO, be the best way to go :) BTW, you have to send photos when you get done!

Doug, thanks for your original question. I've enjoyed learning more about this topic. (As a young bride, I had the honor of personally laundering and pressing the Co. B, 1st BN, 5th Cav guidon before parades and ceremonies, so I'm kinda attached to the topic)

Great links "Nathan"! I'll find something to my liking here and probably have one of them make me one. Great Gramps served under Buell (Army of the Cumberland? 16th U.S.Inf) at Shiloh and was wounded on the 7th. Now...if you'll pardon my sexist assumptions "Nathan", I thought you were male?? LOL! Sorry. I spose that would explain your picture?? THAT GUY was one magnificent Soldier from all I've read.
Doug, AKA...male chauvinist.

As long as you say nice stuff like that about HIM I'll let you be as oinky as you want. :)

Yes Maam! I got it now! BTW...What is your attraction....er, NO, bad choice of word. I'm already in the hogpen here. Why the "interest" in the GREAT General Forrest?? Just wonderin'.

I admire someone who never quits and also a man who has enough guts to admit he's been wrong and try to make real amends. (And a man who cries when his horse dies is okay by me)

Excellent reply! I share your sentiments about people. Thank you. Didn't know he cried when he lost a horse but I'm not surprised. There was a time not long ago when I thought I had zero emotions about such things. Holding my dog in my arms as she fell limp due to cancer at the tender age of 7 made me realize I WAS alive and with emotion. I wept like a baby. God bless you AND my Lily!
