Regarding accessing records on Fold3 and Ancestry without a membership.
Check your municipal library. Many offer access to a version of the websites in their genealogy centers or through your home computer using your library ID.
The library version is slightly restricted. In my city's case I can access both sites from home using my ID, but you can not build family trees and can only download a document by page, not the full document in one download; but otherwise all records are available for search and viewing.
