Looking for a citation

I'm pretty sure @Gary Morgan has a source but I would be grateful for assistance from anyone who knows of publications that mention how the Squad/Mess system worked at Andersonville. I understand the basic concepts but am looking for a published source that defines both terms and describes how they functioned. This is for inclusion in a paper I am currently writing. Thank you.

Does it need to be a primary source? My first thought is the Chipman book on the Wirz trial, as much as I hate and don't trust it. It has quite a bit of testimony and explanations from both Confederate and Union witnesses.

Never, Ever, EVER take anything John McElroy says at face value - he lies about things almost constantly in his book. I have a whole second chapter in the Raiders book that dismantles him and John Ransom's credibility.

The Chipman book is also wicked biased (I now wait to open it at medical appointments until after they've taken my blood pressure), but it's one of the few places when you get to hear from Confederate prison personnel and black POWs
