These aren't mine, but I'd thought I'd share stories friends have told me they've experienced. One is a legend that is told around here but I don't actually know of anyone who has experienced it.
Some friends of mine, before they were married, decided that they wanted to do something one evening, being bored. Not having a lot to do, they figured they'd go for a bit of a drive, and they were going through the battlefield and decided to park their car at the NY monument at Manassas battlefield and lay on the hood of the car and watch the stars and talk. It was a decent enough night, with a little wind and no clouds in the sky when the breeze stopped and they heard a moan off in the distance. They both sat up and looked around, but couldn't see much since it was dark. After a few moments they both settled down and shrugged it off and then a moment later they heard the moan again, but louder and closer. At that point they figured they'd had enough and got in the car and left. I asked if it was a cow, but they were adament that it was not.
There is a bridge around here that goes over a creek where a troop of Union cavalry was supposedly ambushed by Confederates one night. Legend has it that if you park on one side of the bridge and look through your rear view mirror across to the other side you can sometimes see ghosts of soldiers walking across the bridge. If you turn around to look, they are not there.
In a similiar trend, a friend told me of a time he was riding on one of the back roads around here late at night with three other friends when their car suddenly cut off. They came to a stop and sort of slid to the side of the road and put on their blinkers while the driver tried the start the car, but it just wouldn't start up. After a couple of more tries, images of soldiers walked out from the woods and in front of the vehicle. It was described to me that they were close enough so they could make out the buttons, which indicated that they were Union soldiers. After a few seconds, which seemed like an eternity, the soldier's disapeared into the woods on the other side of the road. Quietly, the driver went to start the car again and it started up just fine. My friend said no one said a word until they got into town, about 10 minutes later.
If you have any to share, feel free!
