What is this? Lionskin: What Is It ?

From an 1834 issue of the San Felipe Gazette comes this list of ready made goods, clothing and fabrics. I will try to scan it but for the nonce, WHAT IS LIONSKIN and what was it used for ? I've seen it in newspaper adverts in 1860's and beyond.
