My nephew has gotten me interested in the Navy during the Civil War . I recently found Lincoln's Admiral The Civil War Campaigns of David Farragut which was the perfect book to further that interest .
This is an interesting biography of Admiral Farragut and a good introduction to the warships , strategy/tactics
of both navies. The personalities of the commanders , the toughness of the crews also add to this books value.
Result is I have found a nugget .

I read that a few weeks ago and enjoyed it as well. Farragut was a very determined man and mad some great accomplishments for the Union. His recognition of how they would have to attack the forts alongside the Mississippi - get behind them and land troops, instead of trying to destroy them with fire from the ships while in front of them - was a brilliant realization.

This reads somewhat like the naval equivalent of N.B. Forrest. Don't mess with the stuff (or people, or things) that aren't a threat. Certainly don't go headlong into certain death. A big cannon sitting on the wall of a fort is a hazzard to a naval vessel. (My great thought for the day.) **** the torpedos, full speed ahead. The Raines brothers of Nashville had done their job, but Farragut avoided them.
