This is as close to a candid photo as it was possible to take. Mathew Brady caught him in a thoughtful pose and asked Lincoln to hold the pose while he set up his camera.
This is NOT photoshopped, it was taken by Lewis Emery Walker, a government photographer in Feb., 1865. The short, somewhat modern haircut was suggested by Lincoln's barber to assist in the making of his life mask by Clark Mills.
