March 8, 1864 - President Lincoln meets General U.S. Grant face to face for the first time. Grant had traveled east to Washington DC to accept his promotion to Lt. General of all Union Armies, which made him the highest ranking officer.

Grant was such an unassuming person that when he checked into Williard's Hotel in Washington before meeting the President, the hotel clerk didn't recognize him. Figuring that Grant was some rural bumpkin, the clerk told Grant there were no rooms available, except for some dingy garret. Grant of course, accepted that accommodation, but when the clerk discovered Grant's real identity, he quickly apologized and offered Grant the finest room in the house.

It has been stated on this forum a while back that Grant had a white linen duster over his blue Major General's uniform. The duster would cover the rank but still wouldn't the clerk recognize the blue uniform?
