OTD, September 6, 1864, General Sherman issued Special Field Orders No. 66 to his his Union Army which had successfully taken Atlanta a few days before. This Order conveyed the Orders of President Lincoln to commemorate this victory and the congratulatory telegram from General Grant. In his memoirs, Sherman correctly cited this military victory as essential to President Lincoln's reelection on November 8, 1864.
