Lewis was one of my 3rd great grandfathers.

He was born in 1842 in Nicholas County, Virginia (now WV)

He died in 1914 in West Virginia.

His wife was Christina / Christena Rachel (Williams) Walker
She was born in 1842 in Nicholas County
She died in 1928.

Family lore is that he served. Nobody is sure what side (let alone if he even served) His year of birth would definitely make him eligible.

I am curious to see if he served (at all) and with what unit.

Thank you in advance.

Respectfully,
Kyle Kalasnik

The one record I can find that really fits is a Union draft registration - Lewis Walker, age 20, married, farmer, living in Nicholas County, WV. But I can't see any record that he enlisted or served. He isn't on the 1890 Veterans Census or other lists of veterans from the county that I could find.

There was a Lewis W. Walker who served for the Confederacy in the 61st Virginia but he enlisted in Norfolk County, VA which seems a ways away for your Lewis. Walker isn't such an uncommon name after all.

I never discount family lore, though I often water it down. It may well be that Lewis showed up at one of the battles that took place in the area and served in some capacity. But as far as I can tell he wasn't formally part of either army.

I appreciate your help. Course someone could have him confused with another 3rd great grandfather.
They could be conflating two different people. Or they could remember him talking about a real event in his past and adding details. He says he was in a fight - they remember battle. He says he took part once - they remember that he served through the war. It's easy to do and I'd be a stone cold liar if I said that hadn't happened in my own family.

Check the 1910 census to see if he claimed service in the Civil War (third column from the right).
