War Service 1861 civilian aide to McClellan in western Virginia, January 1862 Col. of 78th Ohio, Fort Donelson, Shiloh, November 1862 appointed Brig. Gen. of Volunteers, commanded 2nd Bde/3rd Divn/XVII Corps in Vicksburg campaign, commanded 3rd Divn/XVII Corps in Atlanta campaign, Leggett's Hill, March to the Sea, Carolinas campaign, August 1865 promoted Maj. Gen. of Volunteers.
Brevet Promotions Maj. Gen. U.S.V. September 1 1864.
Post War Career Lawyer, US commissioner of patents, businessman.
