I heard on a tour that the map Lee used to plan day three had several inaccuracies to include the placement of some guns, troop placement and not clearly knowing where parts of the Federal line were. I was wondering if any of you buffs knew a little more about it. I know about the Johnston reconnaissance of day 2 and that whole story but was that the same map he used for day 3? And if so what updates were or were not made the night of July 2nd? Was it the Hotchkiss map that was made earlier in the year?

Any and all information relating to the maps used (on either side for that matter) would be a de - light for me to read!

I seem to remember Lee's map was off in terms of where landmarks were - like the distances were too short or something.

I do recall in my many books on Gen Lee, on the night of the 2nd when he return to his HQ, he ask an aide to get him a map of Gettysburg, when the Aide returned, he told the Aide he wanted an updated map, when the Aide returned he told Gen Lee that he could find no other map, Gen Lee remarked that it would have to do.
