They didn't excise much substance. Seriously, one and a half volumes of the full set is footnotes.

The footnotes were the best part. Honestly, I have more stuff marked in that book...including footnotes. That was something I read early on, and I've never regretted the investment in the actual books. I use them all the time to look up things I can't remember.

I'm a sucker for good footnotes. Sometimes they're more interesting reading than the text itself, although in the three-volume version, I think it's about even.
