Booker T. Washington said, "The first white people in America, certainly the first in the South, to exhibit their interest in the reaching of the Negro and the saving of his soul through the medium of the Sunday-school were Robert E. Lee and "Stonewall" Jackson"

Is there any greater deed for a Christian, than that of saving one's soul..?

The personal testimony of both men and their actions lead me to believe that their Christianity was genuine.

"Please thank them for that, sir. I warmly appreciate it. And I can only say that I am nothing but a poor sinner, trusting in Christ alone for salvation, and need all the prayers they can offer for me." " ― Robert E. Lee

Well, the South was very Christian (mostly Protestant and sometimes Catholic) even to this day which is the reason for the Bible Belt and the North was still also Christian being both Protestant and Catholic like its neighbor below the Mason-Dixon Line.
