Here is another variation of the typical "then and now" format that I use for my Gettysburg hobby. In this one, I am using John Paul Strain's painting titled, "Headquarters Gettysburg". In the painting, General Lee and Longstreet confront Stuart's advanced scouts with the one question Lee had been asking since the battle began, "Where is Stuart?". It appears the artist used Mathew Brady's July 15th, 1863 photograph of the Thompson house on the Chambersburg Pike seen on the right, which Lee used as his HQ July 2nd and 3rd. Note that in Brady's photograph, you see his assistant and the widow Thompson. Much more difficult to see is Brady, himself, back against the trellis.
