Not long ago I added a decent condition knapsack to my collection. Over the weekend I was able to trade it back for a better condition upgrade. They were both probably from Bannerman's stock as they were never issued. The upgrade is in very good shape with all the buckles and straps (some leather a little dryer than others). I believe this bag is referred to as the "pattern 1864 double bag knapsack". I thought some of you may be interested in seeing this. Thanks for looking. A group of phtos to follow. Inside pics first.

Very interesting. These are the first detailed photos I've ever seen of a CW-era knapsack. Thank you for posting!

Nice photos, I have a similar 1864 Union knapsack. I am trying to figure out how to display it. I have made display cases for some of my other artifacts, how do you have your knapsack displayed?

Joshua, I have a display case for most of my CW artifacts but there's no room for my knapsack. For now I have it laying on an old wooden box, used as a table, next to the display case. The knapsack is stuffed with acid free paper that my wife got for me. It's laying flat with the shoulder straps on top (photo #3). I'd enjoy seeing photos of your knapsack and other artifacts.

I have always wondered about wearing one of these all day. They do not look particularly uncomfortable. Armies around the world had been using knapsacks similar to this for some time and the design was refined by the start of the Civil War.

No, the M1855 bag carries very well, especially if worn in conjunction with the M1855 Rifleman's belt that enables the "J" Hooks to be attached to the belt to more evenly distribute the weight of the pack.
