Arthur MacArthur went to war as a lieutenant at the age of 16 and earned the Medal of Honor for valor at Missionary Ridge in 1863 when he seized the colors and led men of his regiment up the slope with the cry "On, Wisconsin!" He was only 19 when he was promoted to colonel and later became a distinguished general in the postwar U.S. Army and the father of an even greater commander, Douglas MacArthur. Kids these days--any comments?

Not a comment but a question. Are we sure Arthur was promoted to Colonel at age 19? That's pretty darn young...

OK, I haven't read it. The Wiki on Arthur says he was brevetted Colonel in 1863 and actually promoted to Major in January, 1864 with another promotion to Lt. Colonel in the spring of 1865. Still, that's quite a lot for a youngster!

May just before he was discharged. He was less than a month short of his 20th birthday.
