KERNSTOWN BATTLEFIELD MUSEUM ROBBED

Good they reported the theft. Hopefully the police share images all over the internet so the objects can't be sold. The FBI should be informed because theft from a museum of an object over 100 years old or valued at over $10,000 also falls within their jurisdiction to investigate.

The trouble with small museums is that they don't have much of a budget for theft prevention. Cameras with recording, motion sensors, alarmed vitrines, alarms to local law enforcement agency, fire suppression, outside lights and cameras (recorded). All this costs $$$, something that is hard to get for a money losing operation (most museums lose money).

@Northern Light I wondered that too. Might also be someone who wanted them for themselves. I've read about several rare book thefts that were hard to solve because the books never went on the black market. Come to find out, the thieves kept the books.

Regardless of who did the stealing or why, I hope the material is recovered soon.

Wow! I have 3 hats that were present at the battle and have discussed loaning them to either the battlefield museum or to the courthouse museum. I'll need to re-think the decision in light of this...…...
This is why I am so skittish about loaning stuff out. I have on several occasions, but if there is no insurance and it goes bye-bye, you're out of luck.

Museums of all sizes can be victimized, not just small one, especially if the thieves have a shopping list. I know of one museum that was robbed of a musket during operating hours. It happened several years back I knew the owner of the musket. It was in fine condition when taken, fairly rare too.
