Pre-War Profession Merchant, railroad freight agent.
War Service May 1861 raised 1st (West) Virginia - Col., Philippi (w), May 1861 appointed Brig. Gen. of Volunteers, commanded districts in West Virginia and Maryland, guarded railroads, captured by partisans in Cumberland MD in February 1865, exchanged soon after.
Brevet Promotions Maj. Gen. U.S.V. August 5 1864.
Post War Career Collector of internal revenue, superintendent of a reservation, examiner of pensions.
