How about this Kauffman?

John Lapp Kauffman 1821-1898

His wife was Susanna (King) Kauffman 1821-1911

Any chance he served in the Pennsylvania Volunteers during the Civil War?

Thank you in advance.

Respectfully,
Kyle Kalasnik

I find no John L. Kauffman but there are 18 soldiers named John Kauffman (no middle) who served for a Pennsylvania regiment. And more from other states.

He shows up on a draft roll in June of 1863, age 42, farmer, Leacock Township. There's no indication he was drafted on that roll. There is a John Kauffman on the muster roll of the 50th PA that same month, age 35. He later received a pension which his wife Susan got in 1899. So that could be a match. But as @Bob Velke points out, John Kauffman was not an unusual name.

I suppose that this is the same "Susan" to which @lupaglupa refers: A "Susan" applied in 1899 but did NOT receive a Federal pension on behalf of John Kauffman who served in Co. H, 50th PA _Militia_ Infantry. It appears that John had not previously applied. I'm guessing that she was disqualified because he served in a state militia (not Federal service) and that @lupaglupa was referring to a state pension.

Thank you, but why the difference in age. He would have been 41 born in Sept 1821.

Thanks so much, this might be him.

It may be the age is different because it's a different guy. Or because they wrote the number down wrong. Or he really wanted to serve and shaved a few years off. The records are not always precise! But I'd start with trying to figure out who this John Kauffman is based on the facts given in this record. If you can find a man with that name at that age with that wife who isn't the John you started with, you can eliminate that it's him.
