Purchased this today. Thought it was a neat image and maybe somewhat unusual being from Kansas. Not sure if he's a major or light colonel. Welcome any ideas on how to maybe identify him.

Thanks

Agree. This subject is wearing a double-breasted coat with two vertical rows of seven buttons, evenly spaced, indicating he is a field officer.

The front insignia (one of two) visible on the shoulder strap looks to be either a gold or silver oak leaf, suggesting he might be either a Lt. Col. or Major. Of these two possible ranks, given the brightness similarity of the insignia with the shoulder strap borders (suggesting it may be of the same gold color) in this b/w photo and that he is also relatively young looking, would opt for him likely being a major.

While there is no guarantee this is a Kansan, just because of the location the photo probably was taken, I do have a strong possibility of giving you a person of interest to research.

The soldier's name is Daniel Read Anthony, who joined, as a major, the 7th Kansas volunteer regiment of Cavalry. Age 37 at the time, he later was promoted to Lt. Colonel, and suceeded Charles R. Jennison upon CRJ's retirement in 1862. Daniel also had a younger brother in the same unit, and they were brothers to a more famous Anthony, Susan B! I found several pics of DRA in findagrave (he died in 1904, and two of the pics are of him in later life). A fourth image (I'd guess in his 40's or 50's) is found in a FindaGrave detail of a cenotaph of his in his native state of Massachusetts.

Take a peek at these pics, and tell us whether you think this might be your handsome fella? Wow, such a stylin' handlebar 'stash he sports!
