Tupelo Miss, July 3d 1862
General Orders No 91
I. At a military commission which convened at Tupelo, in the State of Miss: on the 25th day of June 1862 ***** tried W. J. Wainwright, citizen, on the following charges ***** In that he, *****, did steal from a box, the property of Maj G. P. Theobold AQM, the sum of Eleven hundred dollars in Confederate notes ***** To which charge and specification the accused pleaded ***** "Guilty."
After mature deliberation ***** do therefore sentence him, the said W J Wainwright, to have his head shaved, to be placed on a barrel in a standing position at the Mobile & Ohio Rail Road Depot at Tupelo, there to be kept half an hour prior to, and half an hour subsequent to the arrival and exit of the passenger train, with a placard on both back & breast with the words Thief, in letters two inches long, inscribed thereon: this for the period of one week, at the expiration of this time to be sent to some point, to be designated by the General Commanding the Department, to be confined at hard labor, under charge of a guard, for the period of five years, with a twenty four pound ball attached to his leg by an iron chain.
II. The proceedings, findings and sentence are approved, but the Comdr of the Forces is pleased to remit so much of the sentence as condemns the said W J Wainwright to be exposed from time to time in front of the Rail Road Depot at Tupelo *****.
