Just visited Williamsburg!

Just got back last night from Williamsburg, doing some college visits. On the way back, we were able to stop at the site of old Fort Magruder, the site of the battle. Here are some pics from it — the monument and the sunken remains were on private property behind a gate, so I only got faraway shots:

alot of that battlefield lost to modern development. Glad a little was preserved. Thanks for sharing

If you get back there and have time to explore you can find some really impressive redoubts you'll have all to yourself.

Emerging Civil War highlighted Williamsburg several years ago as a 'Forgotten Battle' during one of their annual conferences. I'll attach a link of the C-Span History TV segment of the presentation. Good Stuff, glad to hear preservation efforts are still alive and well.

And that's a great recommendation in a Traveler's Companion thread about Williamsburg. The 2 redoubts(Redoubt Numbers 1 and 2) in Redoubt Park were abandoned before the battle but they are well preserved and there is good interpretive signage in the park about the battle.

I would really like to visit Williamsburg. I had 1 and maybe 2 ancestors who served in CS units that fought at Williamsburg.
And my direct ancestors trace back to Williamsburg. Hon. William Cole (1638-1694) was a trustee at William & Mary College.

I highly recommend a visit to the Mariners' Museum in Newport News too.

When here, make sure you visit Magruder's Headquarters at Lee Hall Mansion that features the Donald R. Tharpe Collection of the Peninsula Campaign 1862.
Also, don't miss Jamestown Island and Yorktown 1781 battlefield and great Museum.

Also, don't miss Jamestown Island and Yorktown 1781 battlefield and great Museum.

Yes, congratulations and best of luck. Make sure you get to Newport News park and visit Magruders lines and battle field for Dam number 1. Also if you can find a POC at Langley AFB, see if they will take you to base housing ( Bethel Manor) area which is the grounds where the Battle of Big Bethel (first land engagement of the CW) took place). I lived in Bethel Manor for 4 years and spent a lot of weekends watching my son play in that picnic area.

You must see Magruder's gold and jeweled revolver at Lee Hall Mansion. He was quite a dandy.
