Just thought I'd share...

I did not know of any photos of my Confederate ancestor, W.W. McCall. However, my newly-discovered distant cousin who has researched the McCall family tree graciously sent me his research. When I loaded the photos onto my computer I was unaware that they included a picture of my ancestor. I was shaken, to say the least, to see what he looked like. Just thought I'd share this with everyone. Don't quit looking or searching, because you never know what you'll find! W.W. McCall.jpg

Congratulations! Yeah I'll bet that was quite a surprise, does he resemble anybody in your family? Just curious. :o

He actually looks a lot like my grandfather did. Without any prompting from me, both my husband and brother said he looked like my grandpa as soon as they saw the photo.

That's pretty remarkable. Ole said in a previous post that Mr. McCall looks scary in that photo, and I've have to agree, and add that, yes, he does have a pretty stern "Make my day" kind of look on him. I figure if I were to try to beat this guy in hand to hand combat I'd better have a lunch packed, 'cause it would take me all day - that's if I were to come out ahead in the end, and that's a big "if".

Congrats again on finding the photo.

Well, the family lore is that he was a prankster and avid hunter and gun collector. I don't know if he was trying to look scary but you can tell he had light colored eyes, which is a prominent feature in our family. Could just be that "twinkle" of blue - or maybe he was ready to go fight someone!

I found a great great Uncle who was from Maryland (my mothers side of the family was from MD) He fought on the Union side and appears to have survived the war. he was a Private

I would not mess with your ancestor but he could look worse! I've got a painting supposed to be of my Catawba ggggrandfather, a Revolutionary War vet. His face is covered with tattoos, ear rings, nose ring, legs tattooed like long stockings, ear bit off on one side, tomahawk and huge knife in his belt, leaning on a musket - pretty uncivilized looking character. British navy Capt Parker, in his report about Sullivan's Island, noted the 'American rebels and their savages' had taken his ship - one of them savages was Grampa!

Hey look at my ancestor in my avatar. It was sent to me from a researcher that is only distantly related to me. He told me one my ancestor's granddaughters had it. She was 101 when he contacted her about it. I have no idea who has the actual photo now since she passed away recently.

Thanks for all the comments and interesting stories. Wouldn't you just love to be able to sit down and talk with these ancestors? Or maybe it's better we just "imagine". I've also found other ancestors who fought for the Confederacy and so far I think I had at least three ancestors (two were direct) who fought in the Revolution. It certainly makes our country's history more real to me.
