A friend of mine noticed that I had been pouring over a small, beat-up booklet of the Constitution & running back and forth to the computer to look up cases as they pertain. Arriving in today's mail was this beautiful textbook (he says the Case Law book will bee arriving, soon) The text is huge, so I don't need a magnifying glass -- just my usual specs  I love it!

Congratulations! I should have such great friends...

That looks a lot like the Con. Law text from my undergrad days--of course probably not that edition.

Which edition did you use? :devilish:

My book actually originated from a university bookstore, but I cannot read the name (scratched out)

Now that I'm home I can check it.

I didn't use that book. Mine is Joel Grossman and Richard S. Wells, Constitutional Law and Judicial Policy Making.

They are up to the 18th now and new it costs close to a car payment for most people (List $225). Used and the previous edition is not cheap by any means either. And, any way you cut it, Constitutional Law is not something that changes as frequent as they have editions ;)

My uncle -- a tax lawyer -- grabbed the book and pointed out: "Here's one difference: Scalia is still alive in your book!"

I'm a lawyer and I don't read such things for pleasure. :-)

An interesting note...

I am an alum of the University of Pittsburgh School of Law. My constitutional law professor there was a fellow named Richard H. Seeburger, who is long since retired. Dean Seeburger (he was the former dean of the law school when I had him) had been not only a Harvard Law classmate of Antonin Scalia, but due to the alphabetical seating assignments typically done in law school, had been Scalia's seat mate for their entire time at Harvard. Scalia was nominated to the Supreme Court while I had Dean Seeburger's constitutional law class, and it was pretty obvious that he was extremely jealous of his old friend.

Seeburger was a hard-core believer in the Socratic method. If you asked him a question, he answered you with another question. It was frustrating as all get out. We called him The Riddler as a result. I must admit that when I paid attention in class, I often was more confused by his riddling than I was coming in. Since he took attendance, you had to come to class or your grade would suffer. Consequently, and I have to admit this, I often spent con law doing a crossword puzzle out of self-preservation. :-)

Many concepts of constitutional law are extremely confusing, and if you don't have the formal training in the discipline, you may have some real difficult grasping them. If you need help, ask me, and I will do my best to help.

Thank you so much for your offer of assistance, Eric!

hanna260 nails it when she brings up Hermione Granger of Harry Potter fame: J.K Rowling held extensive interview sessions with me to make sure that the character had the correct mix of geekyness & impatience :)

This brought back a memory of "sneaking around with other books" : When I was forced to go to religious services as a kid, I would insert a science book into the prayer book....and read about bugs during the services. I always received the best behaviour marks, because the the Sunday School teachers praised how attentive I was to the Liturgy :sneaky:

Thanks to the Riddler, I got really good at doing the New York Times crossword puzzle. :-)
