Well, we have the Pilgrim and the Indian thing, you know, that started it all back there on the Plymouth plantation. Those poor folk would have gone to Glory if we hadn't brought in some turkeys and fish and succotash!

It's a uniquely American thing, alex. It's a day when we ought to thank God for what we have, but has devolved into pigging out and watching football. (No, not your football.) But it is a time to gather into families and celebrate that we have families.

It is reunion day. Get the scattered family back together day.

It was Lincoln who decreed (executive order) that the last Thursday of November ought to be that time of national observance was to be Thanksgiving day.

How educational is CWT. diane mentioned 'succotash' and I thought, 'I've heard of that before' so I had to go and Google it and turns out it's a delicious sounding food but I'm sure there was a cartoon figure who used to exclaim " Suffering Succotash!"

Black Friday is old hat now. For the last couple of years, stores have had the audacity to move their sales to Thanksgiving Day itself, and incredibly people went for it. Now this year, Black Friday sales were starting as soon as Halloween ended. You can't go near a shopping mall without feeling you're in a zoo.

All the more reason to stuff my face with turkey and wine and sit on the couch and watch football!

Edward Winslow cataloged what occurred on that "First Thanksgiving". What he had to say about the activities of that November 1621 day, has little resemblance to the national holiday we now celebrate. The main activities were fasting and praying.

The idea of a day set aside for giving thanks, was picked up again by George Washington in his first term. He called for an official day of public thanks-giving and prayer. It wasn't an annual event at that time. In Washington's words, "It is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of almighty God, to obey His will and to be grateful for His benefits and humbly to implore His protection and favor."
