Today I learned about the June 26th battle of Gettysburg. I had no idea about it. I could only imagine how that unit felt. Here's a nice write up

He had a 1-month-old son when he was killed. It looks like he has some g.g.grand children around Newark NJ.

His son's Find-A-Grave notice says that Charles was born June 7, 1863, so did you mean to type 1 month old son? Also interesting that the family started spelling the last name Sandow instead of Sandoe. But my family also changed the spelling of our name at one point, so I can't fault them. In our case it helped the locals pronounce it properly.

I used the Sandow spelling here because that is what is on the grave stone, but the family used the Sandoe spelling.

George Sandoe was actually NOT with the 21st PA Cavalry as mentioned in some literature. He was with the Adams County Cavalry when killed that later became a part of the 21st PA Cav.
It's a pretty sad story having just joined the unit Jun 23, before running into Early near Marsh Creek west of town before falling back through town to just outside town near Rock Creek on the York or Hanover Road where his commander told him and a friend to go home!
They cut south along Rock Creek, (through Culp Farm area/Johnson division staging area) to the area of Spanglers Spring/Mill Pond before heading west then emerging onto the Baltimore Pike where they ran into White's 35th Battalion of Va Cav; a squadron of Comanches. This is where Colgrove Avenue intersects with the Pike. His buddy got away but Sandoe fell along the pike a few miles from his home at Mount Joy, near the 15-bypass/outlets/Lake Heritage area to my understanding.
This had to be especially hard on the family with no one expecting anything like a run in with elements of Lee's army. What a shock.

June 26, 1863 was also the day the 26th PA Emergency arrived Gettysburg and met Confederates under Early's command. Then were again challenged by Whites 35th near Goldenville Road at the Henry Witmer Farm prior to their retreat to Harrisburg.
Markers stand on Rt. 30 (Chambersburg Road) and the intersection of Springs Ave/West Street/ Rt. 30.

There are still Sandoes in the Gettysburg/Biglerville area today. Sandoe's also have several businesses in the Adams County area,, Sandoe's fruit market, Sandoe's self storage etc. If I see Gary/Courtney Sandoe this summer I'll ask them what relation, if any, they are to GW Sandoe.

Obituary of Donald C. Sandow, grandson of George W. Sandoe, as printed in the 15 June 1966 edition of the Asbury Park (NJ) Press. Based on the number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren mentioned there's a good chance there are plenty of descendants still around.

I forgot they used to have a fruit stand-business on the NW corner of Old Harrisburg Pike (Rt-15N, Early's approach) and Shriver's Corner Rd back through my youth and at least high school....and still own a property on the adjacent SE corner called Sandoe's (note spelling with a E) Mini Storage. Thanks for jogging the memory.

We had Trostle's, Weikert's, Culp's and other descendants in my HS class but no Sandoes that I recall. Even had a Mudd descendant who unbelievably as it sounds all these years later had a few wise cracks thrown her way.
